Danio nigrofasciatus (Dwarf Danio)

Family: Cyprinidae

Distribution: Danio nigrofasciatus, better known as the Dwarf Danio, is a tiny freshwater species distributed in the rivers of northern Myanmar, Asia.

PH: 6.5 – 7.0

Temperature: 24°C – 28°C (75 – 84F)

Hardness: 5 – 12 dH

Description: Danio nigrofasciatus is a small species that will reach a maximum length of 4 cm.  It has a standard, elongated Danio shape and a silver colouration with a white line that runs down to the mid-section.  Beneath the white line, which is bordered with black lines, are several small black spots – these also appear on Danio nigrofasciatus’ belly.  Females are noticeably larger and fatter than males.

Diet: Danio nigrofasciatus will accept most flakes and pellet foods, but it is a good idea to add live foods – mosquito larvae, brine shrimp, and Daphnia – and vegetables to keep it strong and healthy.  Avoid bloodworm: it is too large for this fish to digest.

Breeding: The Dwarf Danio, unlike other Danio species, is quite difficult to breed in an aquarium environment.  This species will scatter its eggs throughout your tank, and you should remove the adults straight after spawning.  The fry will begin free swimming after about seven days and should be fed Infusoria until they grow bigger.

Comments: This species will require well-oxygenated water, good filtration, plenty of plants and ample swimming space.  You should make sure you cover your tank with a lid to prevent Danios from jumping out.  A 15 gallon tank should hold several adults.  This is a very easy species to look after.  Aside from breeding, which is reportedly a slightly difficult process, this is a great fish for beginners.
