Description: Danio albolineatus is an attractive species that can reach a maximum length of around 20 cm. It has a pearly, blue-violet colouration with a bold, orange-red stripe that runs from its mid region to its tail. Males have brighter, more impressive colouration, and are smaller and slimmer than females. This forked-tail species has a life expectancy of about five years.
Diet: This species will accept most foods: live, frozen and flake. You can offer it cichlid flakes, pellets and frozen foods. Live foods – mosquito larvae, brine shrimp, and Daphnia – should be added to maintain health and vibrancy.
Breeding: The Pearl Danio will spawn in a school or in pairs, depending on your tank setup. You should have half as many females as males in a tank for several days before you introduce the males. Pairs will form and the eggs will be scattered all over the tank. You should remove the adults straight after spawning. Keep your tank about five degrees warmer and the water level shallow – about 10 to 15 cm – when attempting to breed this species. The fry will emerge in 1 – 2 days and can immediately be given freshly hatched brine shrimp.
Comments: This species will require a well-filtered tank, several plants, rocks and caves, and a sandy substrate. You should house this species in a long tank; make sure you cover it with a lid to prevent it from jumping out. A 20 gallon tank should hold several adults. This is a great species for newcomers to the hobby.
