Sind Danio

Family: Cyprinidae

Distribution: Devario devario, or Sind Danio, is an Asian benthopelagic species found in Pakistan, Nepal, India and Bangladesh, and it has been reported from Afghanistan.  It is distributed among rivers, canals, ponds, and inside inundated fields.

PH: 6.0 – 8.0

Temperature: 15°C – 26°C (59 – 79F)

Hardness: 5 – 19 dH

Description: Devario devario males can reach up to 10 cm in length.  This species has a yellow body, with darker areas on the belly and the fins; its flanks are an iridescent blue colour with some yellow elements.  This species will be brightest if given a well-rounded live-food diet.  Devario devario can be expected to live for 3 – 5 years.

Diet: Devario devario will accept most foods, but can be fed a staple diet of fish pellets and flake.  You should supplement this diet with bloodworms and brine shrimp to keep it healthy.

Breeding: This egg-scattering species will require good live-food for effective spawning.  You will need to add spawning mops or java moss to your tank to accommodate the spawning.  This species can be spawning either in groups or in pairs; you should remove the parents immediately after the spawning has taken place.  The fry, once free swimming, will accept Infusoria until they are large enough to be given freshly hatched brine shrimp.

Comments: This species should be tanked in an aquarium of at least 35 gallons in volume, and given plenty of lateral swimming space.  This species will appreciate some tall plants to hide in and a substrate that will protect the eggs.  This peaceful species is quite sensitive to changing water conditions, so be careful when making adjustments.

Recommended Compatible Species: Devario devario can be kept in a community tank with other non-aggressive, active species.   Avoid housing this species with slow-moving long-finned fish.  The Sind Danio, active by nature, is best kept in groups of 5 – 6.  They will live happily with most Tetra species (particularly the Neon Tetra and Black Tetra). They are also great tank mates with DiscusApistogramma‘s like Apistogramma Cacatouides and Apistogramma BorelliCorydoras Catfish  (particularly Corydoras Sterbai and Corydoras aeneusAngelfishClown loach, the common Guppy and Platy and most Gourami (such as the Blue Gourami and Dwarf Gourami like the Honey Gourami) Also can live happily with most Danio (particularly the Zebra Danio and Pearl Danio)  and also many Killifish make great tank mates.
