Family: Cyprinidae

Distribution: Danio rerio, better known as Zebra Danio, is widely distributed throughout Asia. It is found in Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Myanmar and Nepal, and has been sighted in Columbia. This annual species is found mostly in slow-moving bodies of water – rice-fields in particular – and in streams, ponds, ditches, and canals.

PH: 6.0 – 8.0

Temperature: 18°C – 24°C (64 – 75F)

Hardness: 5 – 19 dH

Description: Danio rerio will reach a maximum length of 4 cm. It has an elongated, torpedo shape and five horizontal blue stripes on its body that extend to the caudal fin – giving it a Zebra-like appearance. Males have gold stripes between the blue stripes; females are larger, with a white belly and silver stripes instead of gold. This species can live up to five years, but it will generally last about 2 – 3 years in captivity.

Diet: Danio rerio is an omnivore and generally eats zooplankton, phytoplankton and insects in the wild. Provide it with algae – it aides in digestion – and worms to maintain a balanced diet.

Breeding: The Zebra Danio is a prolific breeder and is ideal for beginners. It is advised you set the breeding tank up with shallow water and put in plenty of fine-leafed plants for spawning, along with a coarse gravel substrate. The ideal spawning temperature is around – but not exceeding – 26°C. The female Danio rerio can produce 500 eggs, which will hatch within 72 hours. You should remove the adults straight after spawning to avoid them cannibalising the eggs. The fry should be fed finely crushed fry food until they grow bigger.

Comments: This species is excellent for beginners as it doesn’t require strict water conditions. The Zebra Danio will need a well-lit tank, plenty of swimming space and a great deal of vegetation. This small species should be kept in a tank of at least five gallons in volume, although a bigger tank is advised for large groups.

Family: Cyprinidae

Distribution: Danio albolineatus, better known as the Pearl Danio, is a stream-dwelling Asian species distributed from Myanmar to Laos, and in Sumatra, Indonesia. It has been seen in the Irrawaddy, Salween, Mekong, and Mae Khlong drainages.

PH: 6.0 – 8.0

Temperature: 20°C – 25°C (68 – 77F)

Hardness: 5 – 19 dH

Description: Danio albolineatus is an attractive species that can reach a maximum length of around 20 cm. It has a pearly, blue-violet colouration with a bold, orange-red stripe that runs from its mid region to its tail. Males have brighter, more impressive colouration, and are smaller and slimmer than females. This forked-tail species has a life expectancy of about five years.

Diet: This species will accept most foods: live, frozen and flake. You can offer it cichlid flakes, pellets and frozen foods. Live foods – mosquito larvae, brine shrimp, and Daphnia – should be added to maintain health and vibrancy.

Breeding: The Pearl Danio will spawn in a school or in pairs, depending on your tank setup. You should have half as many females as males in a tank for several days before you introduce the males. Pairs will form and the eggs will be scattered all over the tank. You should remove the adults straight after spawning. Keep your tank about five degrees warmer and the water level shallow – about 10 to 15 cm – when attempting to breed this species. The fry will emerge in 1 – 2 days and can immediately be given freshly hatched brine shrimp.

Comments: This species will require a well-filtered tank, several plants, rocks and caves, and a sandy substrate. You should house this species in a long tank; make sure you cover it with a lid to prevent it from jumping out. A 20 gallon tank should hold several adults. This is a great species for newcomers to the hobby.

Article/Books:

Recommended Compatible Species: Danio albolineatus work well in a community tank, particularly with active tank mates. They will live happily with most Tetra species (particularly the Neon Tetra and Black Tetra).

Family: Cyprinidae

Distribution: Devario malabaricus, or Malabar Danio, is a minnow species found around the west coasts of Sri Lanka and India. It is distributed in a number of different habitats, ranging from mountain torrents to small pools; it is more common in flowing water than in tanks and reservoirs.

PH: 6.0 – 8.0

Temperature: 22°C – 24°C (72 – 76F)

Hardness: 4 – 18 dH

Description: Devario malabaricus males can reach up to 12 cm in length, but are 8 cm on average. This species has a silver colouration, and blue and yellow longitudinal stripes. It will display a reddish tinge when in prime breeding condition. Females are larger and have a plumper body shape. This species has a life expectancy of up to five years.

Diet: In the wild this species enjoys a diet of insects and vegetable matter, but Devario malabaricus will accept most foods in an aquarium environment. You can feed it a staple diet of fish pellets and flake; supplement this routine with bloodworms and brine shrimp to keep it healthy and vibrant.

Breeding: This egg-scattering species will require a shallow tank for effective spawning. The females will lay their eggs, sticky and light-orange in colour, on plants and the tank glass. You should remove the parents immediately after the spawning has taken place.

Comments: The Malabar Danio should be tanked in an aquarium of around 40 gallons in volume, and given plenty of swimming space. This species will appreciate plants, rocks and moderately hard water conditions. It is recommended to hobbyists of all levels of experience.

Recommended Compatible Species: Devario malabaricus can be kept in a community tank with other non-aggressive, active species – the faster, the better. Avoid housing this species with slow-moving long-finned fish. The Malabar Danio, an active, shoaling fish, is best kept in groups of 5 – 6. They will live happily with most Tetra species (particularly the Neon Tetra and Black Tetra).

Family: Cyprinidae

Distribution: Danio nigrofasciatus, better known as the Dwarf Danio, is a tiny freshwater species distributed in the rivers of northern Myanmar, Asia.

PH: 6.5 – 7.0

Temperature: 24°C – 28°C (75 – 84F)

Hardness: 5 – 12 dH

Description: Danio nigrofasciatus is a small species that will reach a maximum length of 4 cm. It has a standard, elongated Danio shape and a silver colouration with a white line that runs down to the mid-section. Beneath the white line, which is bordered with black lines, are several small black spots – these also appear on Danio nigrofasciatus’ belly. Females are noticeably larger and fatter than males.

Diet: Danio nigrofasciatus will accept most flakes and pellet foods, but it is a good idea to add live foods – mosquito larvae, brine shrimp, and Daphnia – and vegetables to keep it strong and healthy. Avoid bloodworm: it is too large for this fish to digest.

Breeding: The Dwarf Danio, unlike other Danio species, is quite difficult to breed in an aquarium environment. This species will scatter its eggs throughout your tank, and you should remove the adults straight after spawning. The fry will begin free swimming after about seven days and should be fed Infusoria until they grow bigger.

Comments: This species will require well-oxygenated water, good filtration, plenty of plants and ample swimming space. You should make sure you cover your tank with a lid to prevent Danios from jumping out. A 15 gallon tank should hold several adults. This is a very easy species to look after. Aside from breeding, which is reportedly a slightly difficult process, this is a great fish for beginners.

Article/Books:

Recommended Compatible Species: They will live happily with most Tetra species (particularly the Neon Tetra and Black Tetra).

Family: Cyprinidae

Distribution: Devario devario, or Sind Danio, is an Asian benthopelagic species found in Pakistan, Nepal, India and Bangladesh, and it has been reported from Afghanistan. It is distributed among rivers, canals, ponds, and inside inundated fields.

PH: 6.0 – 8.0

Temperature: 15°C – 26°C (59 – 79F)

Hardness: 5 – 19 dH

Description: Devario devario males can reach up to 10 cm in length. This species has a yellow body, with darker areas on the belly and the fins; its flanks are an iridescent blue colour with some yellow elements. This species will be brightest if given a well-rounded live-food diet. Devario devario can be expected to live for 3 – 5 years.

Diet: Devario devario will accept most foods, but can be fed a staple diet of fish pellets and flake. You should supplement this diet with bloodworms and brine shrimp to keep it healthy.

Breeding: This egg-scattering species will require good live-food for effective spawning. You will need to add spawning mops or java moss to your tank to accommodate the spawning. This species can be spawning either in groups or in pairs; you should remove the parents immediately after the spawning has taken place. The fry, once free swimming, will accept Infusoria until they are large enough to be given freshly hatched brine shrimp.

Comments: This species should be tanked in an aquarium of at least 35 gallons in volume, and given plenty of lateral swimming space. This species will appreciate some tall plants to hide in and a substrate that will protect the eggs. This peaceful species is quite sensitive to changing water conditions, so be careful when making adjustments.

Recommended Compatible Species: Devario devario can be kept in a community tank with other non-aggressive, active species. Avoid housing this species with slow-moving long-finned fish. The Sind Danio, active by nature, is best kept in groups of 5 – 6. They will live happily with most Tetra species (particularly the Neon Tetra and Black Tetra).

Family: Cyprinidae

Distribution: Danio kerri, better known as the Blue Danio, is a freshwater species distributed in clear streams on the Malay Peninsula, Asia. It can be found in open waters areas but also in heavily vegetated environments

PH: 6.5 – 7.0

Temperature: 23°C – 25°C (73 – 77F)

Hardness: 5 – 12 dH

Description: Danio kerri is a small species that will reach a maximum length of 5 cm. It has a torpedo-like shape and gold horizontal stripes that go from the caudal fin to the gills. Males are smaller and slimmer than females, who are visibly fatter.

Diet: The Blue Danio will accept most foods: live, frozen and flake. You can offer it high quality flake as a staple diet, but it is a good idea to add live foods – mosquito larvae, brine shrimp, and Daphnia – and vegetables to maintain its good health.

Breeding: Blue Danio, much like the Pearl Danio, will spawn in a school or in pairs, depending on your tank setup – and can even spawn in a community aquarium. Condition the adults with a varied diet before attempting the spawning process. You should remove the adults straight after spawning – they exercise no form of parental care. The fry will begin free swimming after about seven days and should be fed very small food until they grow bigger.

Comments: This species will require well-oxygenated water, good filtration, and a great deal of swimming space. This species doesn’t require an intricate tank setup. You should make sure you cover your tank it with a lid to prevent the Blue Danio from jumping out. A 15 gallon tank should hold several adults. This is a very easy species to look after.
