Family: Cichlidae

Distribution: Symphysodon aequifasciatus, commonly known as Blue Discus, is a freshwater species found in the Amazon River basin along the Solimoes-Amazon River from the Putumayo River in Peru and Columbia, through to Brazil’s Tocantins River basin; it is distributed in the rocky areas of tributaries.

PH: 5.0 – 8.0

Temperature: 26°C – 30C (79 – 86F)

Hardness: 0 – 12 dH

Description: Symphysodon aequifasciatus can reach a maximum length of around 14 cm in an aquarium. This peaceful cichlid is one of the most highly sought-after aquarium species thanks to its beautiful appearance: it has striped horizontal markings, a flat tail and a blue and grey body colouration.  Males have a pointed genital papilla, while females have a rounded papilla.  This species can, if treated properly, live up to 10 years in an aquarium.

Diet: The Blue Discus, a carnivore, can be given Tubifex, mosquito larvae, quality flakes and specially formulated pellets.

Breeding: Symphysodon aequifasciatus can be very difficult to breed in a tank.  This egg-layer will spawn on specially cleaned stones.  The free swimming fry will eat a slime off the sides of the parents, so do not remove the parents prematurely from the tank.  It would be a good option to make daily water changes – around 10 – 20 per cent – during this period, and make sure the tank is very clean.

Comments: A pair of Symphysodon aequifasciatus can be kept in a decent sized tank of around 75 litres, but a bigger tank is recommended.  This species will feel more at home in a dimly lit tank with a weak current, and surrounded by plenty of rocks and leaves.  This species is moderately difficult to look after and is therefore better suited to experienced hobbyists.

Distribution: Apistogramma Agassizii are found hiding in amongst the plants and leaf litter of many lakes and rivers in South America, they are a bottom dwelling cichlid which prefer to stay in one territory.

Hardness: 2 dH – 10 dH

Description: A small and generally peaceful dwarf cichlids which prefers to live in pairs or a harem. The Males have been known to grow to 8cm and the females to 5cm, These are one of the easiest fish to tell males and females apart, Males are bigger, have longer more pointed dorsal, tail, anal and pectoral fins and typically have very colourful fins, with a silvery body which has a solid black line which runs horizontally. Females are normally smaller, with shorter fins and have a bright yellow body with broken horizontal black lines.

Diet: Apistogramma Agassizii’s have a forward pointing mouth and therefore prefer to eat slow sinking food or food from the bottom. They are a non-fussy omnivore which will eat most dried , frozen or live foods.

Breeding: Apistogramma Agassizii are a cave spawning cichlid which will protect their offspring with a passion shown by few other fish. The minimum size aquarium you should attempt to breed them in is a 15ltr tank, although they may lay eggs in a smaller space normally they will eat the eggs.

Set up a cave which is only just big enough for the pair of Apistogramma Agassizii to fit in but small enough that they feel seclueded, they are not particulary fussy when it comes to finding a place to breed, the main considerations are- the pair need to be well fed, water quality good and the pair are not stressed out by humans or other fish.

Tip: Feed live black worms for a week the do a 30% cold water change, this will almost guarantee them to spawn.

Comments: Apistogramma’s are one of the hidden jewels of the aquarium, they have a big personality, they show love in looking after their young and they come in many brilliant colours.

Distribution: Aulonocara guentheri is a freshwater cichlid native to Lake Malawi and Lake Malombe, Africa.  It has also been observed at Senga Bay.

Description: Male Aulonocara guentheri can reach up to 15 cm; females up to 14 cm in length.  It is believed to now be a rare species due to overfishing.

Diet: Aulonocara guentheri is carnivorous and will accept live meats and pellet food as part of its diet.  In Lake Malawi it will feed on small invertebrates living in the sand.

Breeding: The female is a mouthbrooder and should not be stressed during this period so as to avoid destruction of the eggs.

Description: There is little documented on this species.

Diet: This species should be fed a typical diet of live food, pellets and flake.

Breeding: Apistogramma similis, while not a great deal is known about it, presumably spawns its eggs much like any other Apisto does.  Most Apistos tend to spawn in caves so it is recommended you create a cave-like environment for which it can retreat to.

Comments: Not a great deal of information is available on this species.  Most dwarf cichlids can be housed in a 15 gallon tank.

Distribution: Chalinochromis popelini is a middle-bottom dwelling African cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika.  Specifically, its type locality is in Moba, about two-thirds of the way down the southwest side of Lake Tanganyika.

Temperature: 22°C – 27°C (72 – 81F)

Hardness: 8 – 15 dH

Description: Chalinochromis popelini can grow to a maximum length of 15 cm.  This cream-coloured, slim-bodied cichlid has three distinctive longitudinal stripes and a visibly forked caudal fin.  Males and females are very similar, but can be sexed thanks to the male’s pointier genital papilla which slants to the rear.

Diet: Chalinochromis popelini will eat basically any food item in an aquarium setting.  You can feed adults a diet of flake, frozen and pelleted foods, along with most live foods.  You can feed youngsters on baby shrimp, but the adults also have a thing for baby brine shrimp.

Breeding: Chalinochromis popelini, like Chalinochromis brichardi, do their spawning in caves.  The female will lay up to 100 eggs; both sexes will vehemently guard the batch.  Be careful, the pair will become extremely territorial and have been known to kill other species within sight.  It takes only 2 – 3 days for the eggs to hatch, and the fry will be out and about between 5 – 6 days.

Comments: You could keep a pair of Chalinochromis popelini in a 20 litre tank.    Decorate your tank with plants, a gravel substrate and large, rocky formations to create hiding spaces for this secretive spawner.  This species is suitable for beginners, but care must be taken during the breeding stage.

Distribution: Chalinochromis brichardi, sometimes known as Brichard’s Chalinochromis, is an African cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika.

Description: This rubble-dwelling cichlid can reach a maximum length of 12 cm.  It has a black face with purple-blue fins and a longish body typical of Lake Tanjanyikan cichlids.  At a young age it will display stripes, but these will fade as the fish ages to leave an elegant, gray-white appearance.

Diet: Chalinochromis brichardi is easy to feed as it will eat basically any food item.  You can feed adults a diet of cichlid pellets, flake, mosquito larvae, brine shrimp and bloodworms – frozen or live.  It is best to feed the newly hatched fry a diet consisting of baby brine, crushed flakes and powdered fry food.

Breeding: Chalinochromis brichardi can be bred in an aquarium environment.  Spawning will usually take place in narrow caves, so provide plenty of hiding spaces in your tank.  The female will lay up to 120 eggs in a cave, of which the males will fertilise.  It will take 2 – 4 days before the eggs hatch and a further 10 days before the fry are swimming in the tank.

Comments: Chalinochromis brichardi should be housed in a tank at least 120 cm long to allow it plenty of swimming space.  Decorate your tank with stones and rocks to create hiding spaces, and feel free to add plants as well.  This species will appreciate the effort and will make a territory out of these items.  This species is quite easy to look after and is recommended to beginners.

Distribution: Aulonocara saulosi cichlids, sometimes called the Emerald Face or Green Face Cichlid, is found in Lake Malawi.  It is distributed south of the Mozambique border near Masinje, on the eastern shore.

Temperature: 22 – 26°C (72 – 79°F)

Hardness: 15 – 30 dH

Description: The Emerald Face Cichlid reaches a maximum of 9.2 cm in length; females are slightly smaller.  Its unique bullet-shaped head distinguish it from other Peacock cichlids.  Emerald Face cichlids from southeast regions have a blue head, while those from the northeast region have a green face, from which it derives its common name.  The males have a colourful appearance; females retain a duller, grey-brownish hue.

Diet: Aulonocara saulosi requires meat in its diet.  You should feed it high quality cichlid pellets as its staple, supplemented with shrimp and various other shellfish a few times a week.  The Emerald Face Cichlid should not be fed bloodworm or land based animal food.

Breeding: The Emerald Face Cichid is a maternal mouthbrooder with a preference for harem breeding.  Males play no real part in parental responsibility; the female will hold its eggs in its mouth for approximately 28 days.

Comments: Ensure your aquarium is at least three feet long to provide ample room for swimming and hiding.  The tank should also include a mix of gravel and coral sand.  Provide this cichlid with plenty of rocks, along with good lighting and good filtration.

Apistogramma are a dwarf cichlid from South America, most only growing to a maximum of 3 inches.

The name “Apistogramma” litterally means “irregular lateral line” which refers to the pattern on many of the Apistogramma’s, especially the females.

There are over 250 types recorded so far and more being found every year, some of these are the same species and just different colour variations, others are completely different species which are just waiting to be scientifically described.

These are truly one of the most under-rated tropical fish, with their brilliant colours and interesting personalities they are certainly a fish which should be kept when possible.

Description: Aulonocara macrochir cichlids can reach up to 15 cm in length.  Adult males have a metallic shade containing several different colours, particularly blue and green.  Females are mostly brown in appearance and slightly smaller in size compared to males.  Both sexes have distinctive three spot markings.  Chisawasawa cichlids have a life span of eight years.

Diet: The Aulonocara macrochir is omnivorous and will appreciate a cichlid flake or pellet food as its staple.  Supplement this with snails and fresh green vegetables.

Breeding: The female is a mouthbrooder. The male creates a spawning site and will fertilise the eggs once the female has laid them; the female will then hold the eggs in her mouth for up to 3 – 4 weeks.  It is best to separate the male and female during this period.

Comments: Chisawasawa cichlids should be housed in an aquarium no less than 55 gallons in volume.  You should provide this species with plenty of open swimming space given its size.

Distribution: Pterophyllum leopoldi, sometimes known as Leopold’s Angelfish, is a benthopelagic freshwater species found along the Solimoes Amazon River between Manacapuru and Santarem, and in Guyana’s Essequibo River drainage.

PH: 6.0 – 8.0

Temperature: 21°C – 26C (70 – 79F)

Hardness: 6 – 16 dH

Description: Pterophyllum leopoldi can reach a maximum length of 5 – 6 cm. It differs from other Pterophyllums because it has a black splotch at the dorsal insertion on the fourth vertical bar, and doesn’t have a pre-dorsal notch.  Males are generally larger than females.  This slender, large-scaled species can live from 5 – 10 years.

Diet: Pterophyllum leopoldi is a greedy feeder that will accept any flake and pellet foods.  You should offer it regular servings of brine shrimp, bloodworms and Tetra Red to maintain its health.

Breeding: Leopold’s Angelfish will choose a spawning site – usually the tank glass or some slate leant against the sides – and the adult pair will clean the space.  The female will lay her eggs and the male will promptly fertilise them.  It takes a few days before the eggs hatch; the fry will be swimming freely one week later.  The fry should be fed small quantities of food at regular intervals.  Pterophyllum leopoldi is best bred in a one-species tank; it can become territorial during breeding.

Comments: You should tank Leopold’s Angelfish in no less than 35 gallons.  Angelfish will feel comfortable in an environment as close to their natural habitat as possible, so add plenty of plants to your tank.  Keep the water flow gentle and be careful with the water parameters.  You can add rocks, roots and bogwood to create hiding spaces, but don’t forget to allow this species plenty of swimming space.  Pterophyllum leopoldi is easy to look after and is suitable for newcomers to the hobby.

Distribution: Apistogramma tucurui is a dwarf cichlid found in South America, specifically Brazil’s Rio Tocantins’ basin.

PH: An ideal level lies between 5.5 – 6.5.

Temperature: Most Apistogramma species can be housed in temperatures between 75 – 80°F (24 – 26°C)

Hardness: This cichlid has been successfully bred in water hardness as high as 10 dGH.

Description: Apistogramma tucurui, like many of the cichlid family, is noted for its colourful appearance.  It has a golden head and several spots and stripes that originate in the head region and extend over the entire body.   The posterior side of the Apistogramma tucurui’s body is of a turquoise colour, as is its anal and dorsal fin.  This species, unlike other Apistogrammas, has up to seven black stripes in the head area and as many as nine stripes along its flank.

Diet: This species should be fed the same diet as Apistogramma brevinidus; it is omnivorous and will accept most foods.

Breeding: This species doesn’t appear to require special water conditions to breed.  You should put more females than males in a tank to maximise your chances of breeding Apistogramma tucurui.  Your chances of successful spawning will go up if you put at least two couples together in your tank.

Comments: This species should be kept in a large tank of at least 375 litres.  Apistogramma tucurui is slightly more aggressive than other Apistogramma and requires more space to accommodate its needs.  Remove leftover food from the tank promptly and change the water regularly to keep its quality.

Description: Aulonocara stuartgranti cichlids can reach up to 12 cm in length and are easily sexed due to the bright blue appearance of the males and the grey of the females.  Male Regal Peacocks have an anti-social temperament.  This species can live for up to 12 years, depending on how it is cared for.

Diet: Aulonocara korneliae requires prepared cichlid foods, vegetable matter and live meats; young fry can be served brine shrimp and powdered flake upon birth.

Breeding: The female Aulonocara korneliae is a mouthbrooding Malawi.  It lays its eggs on a stone and will take them into the mouth soon after.  Allow plenty of hiding spots and caves for effective breeding.  Stress to the female could provoke it to eat its eggs and fry.

Comments: Aulonocara stuartgranti require weekly water changes and are sensitive to nitrate.  Allow plenty of free area for swimming and avoid putting roots in your aquarium as they lower the pH levels.  Provide stone formations so territories and hiding places can be established.  On the whole, the Regal Peacock is an extremely manageable fish and suitable for beginners.

Comments: This species is aesthetically pleasing and easy to look after.  Make sure you provide plenty of open areas for swimming and enough caves and hiding spots in which to sleep or breed.

Diet: Apistogramma Cacatuoides have a forward pointing mouth and therefore prefer to eat slow sinking food or food from the bottom. They are a non-fussy omnivore which will eat most dried , frozen or live foods.

Breeding: Apistogramma Cacatuoides are a cave spawning cichlid which will protect their offspring with a passion shown by few others. The minimum size aquarium you should attempt to breed them in is a 15ltr tank, although they may lay eggs in a smaller space normally they will eat the eggs.

Set up a cave which is only just big enough for the pair of Apistogramma Cacatuoides to fit in but small enough that they feel seclueded, they are not particulary fussy when it comes to finding a place to breed, they have even been known to lay eggs on the underside of leaves, the main considerations are- the pair need to be well fed, water quality good and the pair are not stressed out by humans or other fish.

Tip: Feed live black worms for a week the do a 30% cold water change, this will almost guarantee them to spawn.

Comments: Apistogramma’s are one of the hidden jewels of the aquarium, they have a big personality, they show love in looking after their young and they come in many brilliant colours.

Description: Aulonocara steveni is one of the smaller Peacock cichlids, reaching around 9 cm in length.  The males have a yellow body and a metallic-blue head; females have a brown colouration and are slightly smaller than males.  This species, giving credence to its Peacock name, will “strut” around in your aquarium with its fins at full extension.

Diet: Aulonocara steveni are not fussy and will eat most foods.  Flakes, pellets and live foods are good for this species; combine flake with frozen food.

Breeding: The Pale Usisya Aulonocara male will attempt to garner the attention of the female via an elaborate show which, from all account, is quite interesting to watch.  These cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders and, as such, the female will hold the eggs in her mouth until the fry is ready for release.

Comments: Pale Usisyas are easy to keep and do not demand a specific tank setup.  It will accept a tank with gravel or sand, rocks, swimming areas and, if you desire, live plants.  This is a medium-sized Aulonocara which can be easily kept in a 100 litre tank.  This species is suitable for beginners or intermediate hobbyists.

Comments: As with all Apistos, you should provide plenty of hiding spaces and spawning areas for Apistogramma staecki. You could easily house several of this species in a 30 gallon tank.

Distribution: Benthochromis tricoti is an African cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika; it lives in deep waters of up to 150 metres.

Description: Benthochromis tricoti can reach up to 30 cm in length, which makes it one of the great aquarium cichlids.  It has huge eyes, a yellow throat and some incredible blue or purple horizontal stripes.  The females, in contrast, are colourless.

Diet: In nature, this species feeds on invertebrates mostly.  In an aquarium environment, you will have no problem feeding it most foods.  You could provide it with frozen brine, flake food and typical fish pellets.  You might offer it some shrimp or bloodworms on the odd occasion.

Breeding: There is not a lot of actual information available on breeding this species, most likely because it is a near impossible task.  The female, a maternal mouthbrooder, will initially lay one egg on a small hill or flat stone.  The male will fertilise the egg, at which point the female will collect the egg and lay another one, up to about 10 -12 eggs.  Once the hold period is completed the young fry can be fed with high quality fry food or hatched brine shrimp.  This species is one of the toughest to breed in captivity.

Comments: This species will need a big aquarium – at least 300 cm in length.  You will also need to provide spots of thick, dense vegetation, and a sandy substrate to simulate its natural environment.  This species will not attack your plants.  You must make sure Benthochromis tricoti has plenty of room to swim around, given its size.  This is a great fish to look at, but very tough to breed.  This is not a fish for newcomers to the hobby.

Description: Reaching up to 18 cm in length, Aulonocara rostratum has the honour of being the largest Aulonocara.  It has a pointed snout which separates it from its Peacock relatives.  The adult male has a light blue throughout its head, fins and body.  There are some yellow speckles visible on its fins and small egg spots on the anal fin.  Females are simply a silver colour.

Diet: The Longnose Aulonocara is a carnivore and will enjoy a diet of flake or pellet food, supplemented with frozen brine, mysis or krill.  In nature, this species feeds specifically on sand-dwelling invertebrates.

Breeding: Female Longnose Aulonocaras are mouthbrooders and should not be stressed during this period of incubation.  Any severe stress to the female may result in her eating the eggs.  There is not a great deal of other information available on this species’ breeding habits, so it is best left to experienced hobbyists.

Comments: Your aquarium – large in size – should also contain rock work and plenty of swimming space along the bottom and mid-tank sections.  This is not a fish for beginners.

Recommended Compatible Species: The Longnose Aulonocara suits other Peacock species, but avoid housing this species with Mbuna cichlids.  The Mbuna is far too aggressive and will definitely clash with Aulonocara rostratum.

Description: Adult males have a distinctive dorsal fin colouration with a black margin and blue stripe.  They have a black anal fin which contains large speckled egg spots.  The Aulonocara aquilonium has 16 – 17 dorsal fins, 9 – 11 dorsal soft rays, three anal spines and 8 – 9 soft anal rays.  They have a peaceful temperament and reach a maximum length of 8.5 cm.

Diet: Aulonocara aquilonium cichlids are carnivores and should be fed live invertebrates where possible.

Breeding: The female Aulonocara aquilonium is a mouthbrooder, which means they hold their eggs in their mouth for an extended period of time.  Ensure there are plenty of hiding spaces for the female during spawning. Severe stress can force the females to spit their eggs out prematurely, so avoid moving these fish during this time.  Some Aulonocara cichlids have been known to breed with each other, so avoid housing with other cichlids unless you want to encourage interbreeding.

Comments: Make sure there are plenty of hiding spots and open swimming spaces for this species.  Given its size, Aulonocara aquilonium should be housed in a medium-sized tank.  Make sure you have sand – or an equivalent – in your tank, as this species is found in sandy areas.

Aulonocara ethelwynnae

Distribution: The Aulonocara ethelwynnae is a species of dwarf cichlid distributed around Malawi, particularly off Chitende Island.

Hardness: 14 – 28 dGH

Description: The Aulonocara ethelwynnae cichlid, sometimes called the Chitende Cichlid, can grow up to 8 cm in length in an aquarium.  The male’s fin will develop a velvet blue colour, while its body will be brown with a bluish face.  The male’s anal fin will have large yellow egg spots which allow it to be easily identified in an aquarium.  Females, in contrast, will be a brown or grey colour.  Keep one male and three females in a tank with a minimum of 108 litres.

Diet: The Chitende Cichlid will appreciate a well-rounded diet of blood worms, krill, brine shrimp, with a cichlid flake or pellet food as a base.

Breeding: The Aulonocara ethelwynnae is a spawning cichlid.  The female is a mouthbrooder and will often hide away and not eat during the three week incubation period.

Comments: Provide a combination of rockwork and open swimming space for the Aulonocara ethelwynnae along the bottom and middle sections of your aquarium.  The females will appreciate this hiding space during the breeding period.  Like most Aulonocara, it is best to keep a smaller ratio of males to females: 1: 3 is advised.

Recommended Compatible Species: Placidochromis, Copadichromis, Otopharynx lithobates, hard water rainbow fish and cyprinids will all make good tank mates.  Be careful to avoid combining with other fish of the same genus, as this may lead to interbreeding.

Apistogramma Rubrolineata

Family: Cichlidae

Distribution: Apistogramma Rubrolineata is distributed throughout the deep to middle waters of South America, particularly the Rio Manuripi in Bolivia.

PH: 5.5 – 6.5

Temperature: 22 – 30°C (72 – 86°F)

Hardness: 9 – 18 gDH

Description: This species has a very distinctive colour pattern that distinguishes it from other apistos.  The Apistogramma Rubrolineata’s horizontal stripes and colourful characteristics – seven dark red lines and an arc where the postorbital stripe and mid-lateral band meet – give it a unique appearance.  The Apistogramma Rubrolineata has a total of 15 – 16 dorsal spines, between 7 – 8 dorsal soft rays, three anal spines and 6 – 7 anal soft rays.  This particular dwarf cichlid was only discovered in 2001 and described in 2002; it is a relative newcomer to the Apistogramma family.

Diet: This species will accept a quality flake or fish pellets as its staple diet.  You should feed this species live food – blood worms, brine shrimp – as a supplementary treat.

Breeding: The Apistogramma Rubrolineata spawns its eggs much like any other Apisto does.  Upon ripening for spawn the female will lose its bright yellow colour for a duller, yellow colouration, before producing a bunch of bright red eggs.  The female Apistogramma Rubrolineata likes to spawn in caves so it is recommended you create a cave-like environment for which it can retreat to.

Comments: These fish are great spawners and have a unique colour that would go well in any home aquarium.  Apistogramma Rubrolineata is a species suitable for beginners to the hobby.

Apistogramma Bitaeniata

Family: Cichlidae

Distribution: Apistogramma Bitaeniata are found hiding in amongst the leaf litter of slow to medium flowing rivers in South America, they are a bottom dwelling cichlids which are typically found in ‘black water’.

Description: A small and generally peaceful dwarf cichlids which prefers to live in harems. The Males have been known to grow to 8cm and the females to 5cm, These are one of the easiest fish to tell males and females apart, Males are bigger, have longer more pointed dorsal, tail, anal and pectoral fins and typically have very colourful fins, with a silvery body which has a solid black line which runs horizontally. Females are normally smaller, with shorter fins and have a bright yellow body with broken horizontal black lines.

Diet: Apistogramma Bitaeniata have a forward pointing mouth and therefore prefer to eat slow sinking food or food from the bottom. They can be a fussy omnivore, but will eat most dried , frozen or preferably live foods.

Breeding: Apistogramma Bitaeniata are a cave spawning cichlid which will protect their offspring with a passion shown by few other fish. The minimum size aquarium you should attempt to breed them in is a 15ltr tank, although they may lay eggs in a smaller space normally they will eat the eggs. Apistogramma Bitaeniata have a much larger spawn than most Apisto’s (100+)

Set up a cave which is only just big enough for the pair of Apistogramma Bitaeniata to fit in but small enough that they feel secluded, they can be quite fussy when it comes to finding a place to breed, the main considerations are- the pair need to be well fed, water quality good and the pair are not stressed out by humans or other fish.

Tip: Provide plenty of leaf-litter, Feed live black worms for a week and then do a 30% cold water change, this will almost guarantee them to spawn.

Comments: Apistogramma’s are one of the hidden jewels of the aquarium, they have a big personality, they show love in looking after their young and they come in many brilliant colours.

Family: Cichlidae

Distribution: The Dwarf Goby Cichlid is endemic to Lake Malawi, Africa.  They prefer the upper regions of water bodies with strong currents and highly oxygenated water.

PH: 7.6 – 8.9 pH

Temperature: 24 – 27°C (75 – 81 °F)

Hardness: 12 – 22 dH

Description: Rocks and rocky caves are a necessity when keeping Dwarf Goby Cichlids: they use them for protection and to keep themselves afloat when scraping algae off the rocks.  They also require highly-oxygenated water.

Eretmodus cyanostictus is a peaceful species and is therefore suitable for community tanks of at least 135L.  However, they can be quite aggressive towards one another, until they form a pair.  It is recommended that the tank hold either one or two of the species, but no more; more than one pair may result in both couples becoming aggressive towards one another.  They will grow to a maximum size of 8-9cm.

This species has a thin, elongated body.  They are covered with small blue spots and sport 6 – 7 transverse white or yellow stripes.  Colouration varies from grays and blacks to light brown, with a beige or light brown head.  The males exhibit brighter colours than the females and will be larger; he will also be distinguishable by his longer pelvic fin.

Diet: The Tanganyika Clown Cichlid’s natural diet is algae that they scrape off of rocks.  Thus, it is recommended that they are given a high amount of vegetable matter (such as spirulina flake) and occasionally treated to live or frozen foods (such as black mosquito larvae).  Do not give Eretmodus cyanostictus brine shrimp as it will cause digestive problems.

Breeding: The Dwarf Goby Cichlid are bi-parental mouth-brooders. Immediately after the female has laid the eggs on a rock, she will sweep them into her mouth whilst the male fertilises them.  She will keep them for approximately two weeks, when they change roles: she drops them into his mouth to incubate for a further week.

The fry themselves are the most difficult part of the process.  They are extremely slow-growing and require a strict feeding regiment.

Comments: Due to the difficulty of breeding and the required water conditions, this fish may be best suited to those with at least a medium-level of expertise.

Description: The Aulonocara auditor has three series of spots on its flank and at the base of the dorsal fin.  It has a maximum length of 8 cm and is mostly peaceful in temperament.

Diet: Aulonocara auditor cichlids are carnivores and should be fed live meat where possible.  You can feed it shrimp, flake, food pellets and bloodworms.  In the wild this species feasts upon sand-dwelling invertebrates.

Breeding: The female Aulonocara auditor is a maternal mouthbrooder.  Severe stress can force the females to spit their eggs out prematurely, so try not to move the fish around during this period.  Ensure there are plenty of hiding spaces for the female during spawning.

Comments: This species will appreciate hiding spaces and sandy areas; it will hover around the middle-lower sections of your aquarium.  You should house it in a medium size tank.  This species is not hard to look after and will suit newcomers to the hobby.

Diet: Aulonocara nyassae cichlids are carnivorous creatures.  They will appreciate plenty of live and frozen foods.  Some examples may include shrimp, bloodworms, fish pellets and a good quality flake.

Breeding: The female Emperor Cichlid is a mouthbrooder and lays her eggs on the substrate before placing them in her mouth.  The male fertilises the eggs while in they are in the female’s mouth.  The female will hold the eggs for 3 – 4 weeks before releasing the youngsters.

Comments: This species will need plenty of rock work for hiding places. The water should also be changed regularly to promote effective breeding.  To emulate its natural environment, you should provide it with sand or a substrate.  A 100 litre tank could hold several Aulonocara nyassae cichlids.

Recommended Compatible Species: Copadichromis and Placidochromis species of a different colour and pattern will make good tank mates.  Make sure you keep one male to a group of females.  Generally speaking, this is one of the more peaceful Malawian cichlids.

Distribution: Apistogramma uaupesi is a South American cichlid distributed in the Uaupes River and the Negro River basin of the Amazon River basin, Brazil.

PH: 4.0 – 5.0

Temperature: 26°C – 29°C (79°F – 84°F)

Hardness: Very soft.

Description: Apistogramma uaupesi are approximately 2.8 cm (males) and 6 cm (females) in length.  This species will flick their fins around into many different positions, making it one of the more expressive Apistogrammas going around.  Females have a slightly different colouration than males.  In neutral mood, this species may have a blue face and red wedge in its caudal fin.

Diet: Small, live food is recommended.  The Apistogramma uaupesi can be rather picky when it comes to its diet and will rarely accept dry food.

Breeding: This is not the easiest fish to breed; it is important you keep the water quality very soft and acidic. When hatched, feed the young offspring very fine infusoria, and later baby brine shrimp.

Comments: Allow plenty of caves and rocks for this cichlid to hide and spawn in.  It is best to keep Apistogramma uaupesi in a large aquarium; a lack of space can agitate these fish and lead to fighting.

PH: It is advised to keep the waters similar to that of Lake Malawi, around the 8.0 – 9.0 mark.

Temperature: 26-29°C (79-84°F)

Hardness: Most Aulonocaras suit a hardness of 10 – 30 dH

Description: Male Aulonocara brevinidus cichlids can reach up to 9.5 cm in length.  The males are also very territorial and will defend a shallow spawning pit.  This species is found in sandy areas at a depth range of up to 20 metres; it will therefore spend a lot of time in the lower to middle regions of your tank.

Diet: In nature, Aulonocara brevinidus will feed upon sand-dwelling microinvertebrates.  In a tank environment this species can be fed prepared cichlid foods, vegetable matter and live meats.  You should supplement this cichlid’s diet with frozen brine, spirulina and krill.  This cichlid is not a fussy eater and will accept most foods given to it.

Breeding: This species is a typical mouthbrooding Aulonocara and does not require brackish water to breed.  It is best to keep one male for many females if you are planning on breeding Aulonocara brevinidus.

Comments: You should house Aulonocara brevinidus in a tank of at least 30 gallons in volume; this cichlid will appreciate the extra space that a larger tank provides.  Allow plenty of hiding spots and rockwork, but ensure there is plenty of space for this species to swim along the bottom and middle of the tank.  Aulonocara brevinidus will spend most of its time in these sections of the tank, so decorate your aquarium accordingly.

Diet: The Aulonocara koningsi is a carnivore.  Keep it sustained through a combination of flake and live foods.

Breeding: The female is a mouthbrooder.  Male Peacock cichlids will spawn with multiple females; the female will house the eggs in her mouth until the fry are ready to swim.

Comments: Aulonocara koningsi cichlids inhabit mixed sand-rock habitats, so adjust your aquarium accordingly.  Allow plenty of swimming space and hiding places for the female to spawn in.  A 100 cm tank will provide enough space for this Peacock to flourish.

Distribution: Cyphotilapia frontosa, commonly known as the Humphead Cichlid, is endemic to Lake Tanganyika, Africa, where it is distributed in the northern part of the lake at depths of up to 50 metres.   

PH: 8.0 – 9.0

Temperature: 24°C – 26°C (75 – 79F)

Hardness: 8 – 12 dH

Description: Cyphotilapia frontosa can reach up to 33 cm in an aquarium, and can live up to 25 years.  This species has 6 – 7 black, vertical bars that run down a white or blue body.  This species is very difficult to sex, although males generally hav ea larger nuchal hump.  As they grow older, this species’ fins get longer and more elaborate. 

Diet: This species will accept all kinds of food.  You can feed the Humphead Cichlid any small fish species, such as krill, shrimp, mysis – even worms.  Do not feed this species flakes; flake is unlikely to do them much good and they will often ignore it as a food source.

Breeding: Cyphotilapia frontosa do not reach sexual maturity for 3 – 4 years, so you will have to be patient if breeding this impressive species.  The sexually active male will turn a shade of blue, particularly in the snout region, and will find an open area to release his milt.  The female, once she has gathered what is going on, will pass over the area and drop an egg.  The male’s milt can fertilise eggs several minutes after it has been released in the tank.  This species’ brood can reach up to 50, sometimes even 80, fry.  The female will hold for up to five weeks, and you should raise the fry separate from the adults.

Comments: You do not need to overly decorate your tank with this species; a few rocks will do the job.  You can use clay pots to create caves and hiding spaces – particularly if you are housing a single Humphead Cichlid.  It is worth adding a sandy substrate to simulate its natural environment.  Given this species’ size, 10 adults should be housed in a tank no less than 125 gallons.

Recommended Compatible Species: Cyphotilapia frontosa is quite a peaceful, tolerant species, but it should not be housed with small, defenceless fish.  Ideal tank mates may include other large Lake Malawi cichlids and some Synodontis species.

Family: Cichlidae

Distribution: Pterophyllum altum, better known as Altum Angelfish, is a South American freshwater species found in the upper Negro River drainage in the Amazon River basin; in tributaries within the Orinoco River basin, and through to Puerto Ayacucho.     

PH: 5.0 – 6.0

Temperature: 27°C – 31C (81 – 88F)

Hardness: 1 – 5 dH

Description: Pterophyllum altum can reach a maximum length of 18 cm; a maximum height of 20 cm.  It has a natural base colour of silver, with three brown-red stripes and red striations that adorn the fins.  It may display red spots and a blue-green dorsal overcast when it reaches sexual maturity; when aroused, it will show a black operculum spot.  This species can live for up to 10 years.

Diet: Pterophyllum altum is perennially in a state of hunger and will accept any flake and pellet foods.  You should offer it the occasional serving of brine shrimp and bloodworms to maintain its health.

Breeding: This species requires very soft, acidic water to breed.  The female will lay her eggs on broad-leaved plants or on your tank glass.  The parents will protect the hatched fry until the next spawning; you can feed the young fry on newly hatched brine shrimp until they are big enough to take crushed flake.

Comments: This species does require strict attention and should only be attempted by hobbyists with plenty of experience under their belt.  Keep Pterophyllum altum in a tank no less than 35 gallons in volume; provide a medium-coarse sand substrate, simulated tree roots, and plenty of stones.  Be careful: this species has a high mortality rate and must be kept in premium water conditions.

Distribution: Apistogramma urteagai, a South American dwarf cichlid, can be found in the Madre de Dios basin of the Amazon River basin, Peru.

Description: Apistogramma urteagai males can reach 4.1 cm in length.

Diet: Most Apistos can be fed small, live foods and a staple diet of flake and/or fish pellets.

Breeding: The Apistogramma urteagai female will deposit its eggs on the ceiling of caves and tend to them.  It is advised you provide pot plants to act as caves for effective spawning.

Comments: There is not a lot of information on this species in an aquarium environment.

Distribution: Cleithracara maronii, better known as the Keyhole Cichlid, is a freshwater, creek-dwelling species distributed in the clear waters of Trinidad, the Orinoco River basin, and rivers from Guyana’s Barima River to French Guiana’s Ouanary River.

PH: 6.0 – 8.0

Temperature: 22°C – 25°C (72 – 77F)

Hardness: 3 – 20 dH

Description: Cleithracara maronii can reach up to 15 cm in nature, but males will usually reach around 8 cm in length; females will be slightly smaller.  This cichlid has a unique oval shaped, short body and a round forehead.  This species’ body is a golden-brown colour, smattered with the occasional faint line.  It has a distinctive dark patch on its mid-section – resembling a keyhole – and fins that range in colour from golden-brown to a dark green-blue.

Diet: Cleithracara maronii cichlids have a distinct preference for live foods.  You can give your Keyhole Cichlid a varied diet of insects, crustaceans, flake, fish pellets, and insect larvae.  When healthy, this species will display an intense colouration, so keep it vital by feeding it a varied diet.

Breeding: The female will lay 300 eggs on a stone, and both parents will tend the eggs.  It is not uncommon for the pair to devour the eggs, so if this continues to happen you should remove the eggs – or the pair – from the tank.  The fry will hatch after 3 – 5 days and can be feed nauplii immediately.  This is one of the easiest species to breed; they can even be bred in a community tank.

Comments: Cleithracara maronii should be housed in a large tank – at least 90 cm in length – and given plenty of hiding spots in the form of rocks and caves.  Provide plants, driftwood, plenty of open swimming space and a fine, sandy substrate for this species to thrive.  It is not a difficult species to keep and is definitely suitable for newcomers to the hobby.

Distribution: Chilotilapia rhoadesii, better known as Bream, is an African freshwater cichlid, distributed in Lake Malawi over muddy bottoms in both shallow and deep waters.

PH: 7.5 – 8.5

Temperature: 23°C – 28°C (73 – 82F)

Hardness: 8 – 15 dH

Description: This Lake Malawian cichlid can reach an impressive 22 cm in length.  Adult males have a blue colouration on both their head and body, with a greyish base colour.  The Bream’s mouth points downwards, which allows it to easily break open snail shells.  It is therefore no surprise that Chilotilapia rhoadesii’s favourite food-type is the snail.

Diet: In the wild, Chilotilapia rhoadesii has a special affinity for snails.  In the aquarium environment it will accept all types of food, but you should vary things up to keep this fish at optimum health.  You might include live foods – snails, of course, are good – and good quality fish pellets, but make sure you don’t forget to feed it vegetables.

Breeding: Chilotilapia rhoadesii females are mouthbrooders.  When attempting to breed this species should you combine a pair of males with a group of females to maximise your chances of successful breeding.  The mother will release the fry after three weeks of mouthbrooding.

Comments: Chilotilapia rhoadesii will require plenty of hiding spaces and a tank size of at least 60 gallons.  You should create rock formations and large caves in your aquarium, and make sure you have a very coarse substrate in place.  You can put plants in your tank if you wish, as it is unlikely this species would attempt to munch on them.  This species is very popular within the hobby and is suitable for beginners.

Recommended Compatible Species: Chilotilapia rhoadesii should be housed with other non-aggressive Lake Malawian cichlids.  Generally speaking, Lake Malawian cichlids do not make good community fish, so it may be a good idea to tank Bream in a one-species aquarium.

Distribution: Pterophyllum scalare, sometimes known as Freshwater Angelfish, is a benthopelagic species found in the Amazon River basin, in Peru, Columbia and Brazil, along the Soilimoes, Ucayali and Amazon rivers.  It is also found in Amapa, Brazil; the Essequibo River, Guyana; and the Rio Oyapock in French Guiana.  It is distributed in swampy, flooded grounds – usually in areas of dense vegetation – and in clear waters.

PH: 6.0 – 8.0

Temperature: 24°C – 30C (75 – 86F)

Hardness: 5 – 13 dH

Description: Pterophyllum scalare can reach a maximum length of 8 cm. This species is one of the most popular choices for hobbyists, thanks to its unique, colourful appearance.  The Freshwater Angelfish has very high dorsal and anal fins, and a veil-tail that adds 3 – 4 inches to its width and length.  This species is generally a silver colouration with white and black stripes.  Pterophyllum scalare can live from 8 – 10 years.

Diet: Pterophyllum scalare is quite flexible when it comes to feeding and will accept any flake and pellet foods.  You should offer it granules, tubifex, small worms, tablets, spinach and lettuce to maintain its health.

Breeding: Pterophyllum scalare is an egg-laying species that should be bred in pairs.  Females will lay eggs on a rock – or a plant – and the male will fertilise the eggs.  This will repeat until there are between 100 – 1200 eggs, depending on how healthy the female is.  Both parents will care for the brood; the eggs hatch within a few days and the fry will stay attached to the spawning substrate.  You can feed the fry newly hatched brine shrimp.

Comments: You should tank this species in a tank with a length of 100 cm; a 20 gallon tank may be sufficient.  The Freshwater Angelfish will feel comfortable in an environment as close to their natural habitat as possible, so add plenty of plants to your tank and make sure the water isn’t too shallow; this species enjoys a tall aquarium.  Provide rocks for spawning sites.   Pterophyllum scalare is easy to look after and is suitable for newcomers to the hobby.
