Description: Male Aulonocara guentheri can reach up to 15 cm; females up to 14 cm in length.  It is believed to now be a rare species due to overfishing.

Diet: Aulonocara guentheri is carnivorous and will accept live meats and pellet food as part of its diet.  In Lake Malawi it will feed on small invertebrates living in the sand.

Breeding: The female is a mouthbrooder and should not be stressed during this period so as to avoid destruction of the eggs.

Distribution: Chalinochromis popelini is a middle-bottom dwelling African cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika.  Specifically, its type locality is in Moba, about two-thirds of the way down the southwest side of Lake Tanganyika.

Temperature: 22°C – 27°C (72 – 81F)

Hardness: 8 – 15 dH

Description: Chalinochromis popelini can grow to a maximum length of 15 cm.  This cream-coloured, slim-bodied cichlid has three distinctive longitudinal stripes and a visibly forked caudal fin.  Males and females are very similar, but can be sexed thanks to the male’s pointier genital papilla which slants to the rear.

Diet: Chalinochromis popelini will eat basically any food item in an aquarium setting.  You can feed adults a diet of flake, frozen and pelleted foods, along with most live foods.  You can feed youngsters on baby shrimp, but the adults also have a thing for baby brine shrimp.

Breeding: Chalinochromis popelini, like Chalinochromis brichardi, do their spawning in caves.  The female will lay up to 100 eggs; both sexes will vehemently guard the batch.  Be careful, the pair will become extremely territorial and have been known to kill other species within sight.  It takes only 2 – 3 days for the eggs to hatch, and the fry will be out and about between 5 – 6 days.

Comments: You could keep a pair of Chalinochromis popelini in a 20 litre tank.    Decorate your tank with plants, a gravel substrate and large, rocky formations to create hiding spaces for this secretive spawner.  This species is suitable for beginners, but care must be taken during the breeding stage.

Recommended Compatible Species: Chalinochromis popelini is a generally timid species, but a pair should be kept in its own tank during the breeding stage. At other times this species can be kept with other Lake Tanganyikan cichlids, such as Julidochromus and Lamprologus.

Distribution: Chalinochromis brichardi, sometimes known as Brichard’s Chalinochromis, is an African cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika.

Description: This rubble-dwelling cichlid can reach a maximum length of 12 cm.  It has a black face with purple-blue fins and a longish body typical of Lake Tanjanyikan cichlids.  At a young age it will display stripes, but these will fade as the fish ages to leave an elegant, gray-white appearance.

Diet: Chalinochromis brichardi is easy to feed as it will eat basically any food item.  You can feed adults a diet of cichlid pellets, flake, mosquito larvae, brine shrimp and bloodworms – frozen or live.  It is best to feed the newly hatched fry a diet consisting of baby brine, crushed flakes and powdered fry food.

Breeding: Chalinochromis brichardi can be bred in an aquarium environment.  Spawning will usually take place in narrow caves, so provide plenty of hiding spaces in your tank.  The female will lay up to 120 eggs in a cave, of which the males will fertilise.  It will take 2 – 4 days before the eggs hatch and a further 10 days before the fry are swimming in the tank.

Comments: Chalinochromis brichardi should be housed in a tank at least 120 cm long to allow it plenty of swimming space.  Decorate your tank with stones and rocks to create hiding spaces, and feel free to add plants as well.  This species will appreciate the effort and will make a territory out of these items.  This species is quite easy to look after and is recommended to beginners.

Recommended Compatible Species: You can house Chalinochromis brichardi in a one-species tank, or keep it with other Lake Tanganyikan cichlids.  It is compatible with Julidochromus and Lamprologus, for example.

Description: The Emerald Face Cichlid reaches a maximum of 9.2 cm in length; females are slightly smaller.  Its unique bullet-shaped head distinguish it from other Peacock cichlids.  Emerald Face cichlids from southeast regions have a blue head, while those from the northeast region have a green face, from which it derives its common name.  The males have a colourful appearance; females retain a duller, grey-brownish hue.

Diet: Aulonocara saulosi requires meat in its diet.  You should feed it high quality cichlid pellets as its staple, supplemented with shrimp and various other shellfish a few times a week.  The Emerald Face Cichlid should not be fed bloodworm or land based animal food.

Breeding: The Emerald Face Cichid is a maternal mouthbrooder with a preference for harem breeding.  Males play no real part in parental responsibility; the female will hold its eggs in its mouth for approximately 28 days.

Comments: Ensure your aquarium is at least three feet long to provide ample room for swimming and hiding.  The tank should also include a mix of gravel and coral sand.  Provide this cichlid with plenty of rocks, along with good lighting and good filtration.

Recommended Compatible Species: Aulonocara saulosi can be housed with Copadichromis, Nyassachromis, Lethrinops, but not with Mbunas.  The Emerald Face Cichlid has a mild temperament and can be tanked with other Peacock species, but take care to avoid interbreeding.

Description: Aulonocara macrochir cichlids can reach up to 15 cm in length.  Adult males have a metallic shade containing several different colours, particularly blue and green.  Females are mostly brown in appearance and slightly smaller in size compared to males.  Both sexes have distinctive three spot markings.  Chisawasawa cichlids have a life span of eight years.

Diet: The Aulonocara macrochir is omnivorous and will appreciate a cichlid flake or pellet food as its staple.  Supplement this with snails and fresh green vegetables.

Breeding: The female is a mouthbrooder. The male creates a spawning site and will fertilise the eggs once the female has laid them; the female will then hold the eggs in her mouth for up to 3 – 4 weeks.  It is best to separate the male and female during this period.

Comments: Chisawasawa cichlids should be housed in an aquarium no less than 55 gallons in volume.  You should provide this species with plenty of open swimming space given its size.

Description: Aulonocara stuartgranti cichlids can reach up to 12 cm in length and are easily sexed due to the bright blue appearance of the males and the grey of the females.  Male Regal Peacocks have an anti-social temperament.  This species can live for up to 12 years, depending on how it is cared for.

Diet: Aulonocara korneliae requires prepared cichlid foods, vegetable matter and live meats; young fry can be served brine shrimp and powdered flake upon birth.

Breeding: The female Aulonocara korneliae is a mouthbrooding Malawi.  It lays its eggs on a stone and will take them into the mouth soon after.  Allow plenty of hiding spots and caves for effective breeding.  Stress to the female could provoke it to eat its eggs and fry.

Comments: Aulonocara stuartgranti require weekly water changes and are sensitive to nitrate.  Allow plenty of free area for swimming and avoid putting roots in your aquarium as they lower the pH levels.  Provide stone formations so territories and hiding places can be established.  On the whole, the Regal Peacock is an extremely manageable fish and suitable for beginners.

Recommended Compatible Species: The Blue Peacock can be housed with its own kind, but be wary of housing males in the same tank.  Avoid tanking the Blue Peacock with Mbunas.  Similar sized Utakas, Rainbow fish and Congo Tetras are compatible with the Aulonocara stuartgranti.

Description: Aulonocara korneliae cichlids can reach up to 9 cm in length; males are more colourful than females.  The male Blue-gold Peacock has a golden background colour and vertical, blue and black bars along its body.  In contrast, females are a dull grey-brown colour.  Male Blue-gold Peacocks have an anti-social temperament.

Diet: Aulonocara korneliae requires prepared cichlid foods, vegetable matter and live meats. They particularly enjoy eating mosquito larvae.

Breeding: The female Aulonocara korneliae is a mouthbrooding Malawi.  It lays its eggs on a stone and will take them into the mouth soon after.  Allow plenty of hiding spots and caves for effective breeding.  Stress to the female could provoke it to eat its eggs and fry.  You should have an aquarium 100 cm (40”) in length to accommodate for this species.  Male Blue-gold Peacocks are very aggressive to one another, so keep one male to several females.

Comments: This species is aesthetically pleasing and easy to look after.  Make sure you provide plenty of open areas for swimming and enough caves and hiding spots in which to sleep or breed.

Recommended Compatible Species: The Blue Peacock can be housed with other placid Lake Malawian cichlids, with the exception of aggressive Mbunas.  Avoid housing males of the same species together, however, unless you have a large aquarium with several territories.

Description: Aulonocara steveni is one of the smaller Peacock cichlids, reaching around 9 cm in length.  The males have a yellow body and a metallic-blue head; females have a brown colouration and are slightly smaller than males.  This species, giving credence to its Peacock name, will “strut” around in your aquarium with its fins at full extension.

Diet: Aulonocara steveni are not fussy and will eat most foods.  Flakes, pellets and live foods are good for this species; combine flake with frozen food.

Breeding: The Pale Usisya Aulonocara male will attempt to garner the attention of the female via an elaborate show which, from all account, is quite interesting to watch.  These cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders and, as such, the female will hold the eggs in her mouth until the fry is ready for release.

Comments: Pale Usisyas are easy to keep and do not demand a specific tank setup.  It will accept a tank with gravel or sand, rocks, swimming areas and, if you desire, live plants.  This is a medium-sized Aulonocara which can be easily kept in a 100 litre tank.  This species is suitable for beginners or intermediate hobbyists.

Recommended Compatible Species: Aulonocara steveni can be housed with almost any tank mates due to its versatile temperament.  Good tank mates may include Copadichromis, Nyassachromis, and Lethrinops species.

Description: Benthochromis tricoti can reach up to 30 cm in length, which makes it one of the great aquarium cichlids.  It has huge eyes, a yellow throat and some incredible blue or purple horizontal stripes.  The females, in contrast, are colourless.

Diet: In nature, this species feeds on invertebrates mostly.  In an aquarium environment, you will have no problem feeding it most foods.  You could provide it with frozen brine, flake food and typical fish pellets.  You might offer it some shrimp or bloodworms on the odd occasion.

Breeding: There is not a lot of actual information available on breeding this species, most likely because it is a near impossible task.  The female, a maternal mouthbrooder, will initially lay one egg on a small hill or flat stone.  The male will fertilise the egg, at which point the female will collect the egg and lay another one, up to about 10 -12 eggs.  Once the hold period is completed the young fry can be fed with high quality fry food or hatched brine shrimp.  This species is one of the toughest to breed in captivity.

Comments: This species will need a big aquarium – at least 300 cm in length.  You will also need to provide spots of thick, dense vegetation, and a sandy substrate to simulate its natural environment.  This species will not attack your plants.  You must make sure Benthochromis tricoti has plenty of room to swim around, given its size.  This is a great fish to look at, but very tough to breed.  This is not a fish for newcomers to the hobby.

Recommended Compatible Species: This species can be kept with other non-aggressive cichlids from Lake Tanganyika, including Xenotilapias, Altoamprologuses and Cyphotilapias.

Distribution: Aulonocara rostratum cichlids are distributed in Lake Malawi, Africa.  They have been known around Karonga, Vua, and Monkey Bay.

PH: 7.5 – 8.5

Hardness: 5 – 30 dH

Description: Reaching up to 18 cm in length, Aulonocara rostratum has the honour of being the largest Aulonocara.  It has a pointed snout which separates it from its Peacock relatives.  The adult male has a light blue throughout its head, fins and body.  There are some yellow speckles visible on its fins and small egg spots on the anal fin.  Females are simply a silver colour.

Diet: The Longnose Aulonocara is a carnivore and will enjoy a diet of flake or pellet food, supplemented with frozen brine, mysis or krill.  In nature, this species feeds specifically on sand-dwelling invertebrates.

Breeding: Female Longnose Aulonocaras are mouthbrooders and should not be stressed during this period of incubation.  Any severe stress to the female may result in her eating the eggs.  There is not a great deal of other information available on this species’ breeding habits, so it is best left to experienced hobbyists.

Comments: Your aquarium – large in size – should also contain rock work and plenty of swimming space along the bottom and mid-tank sections.  This is not a fish for beginners.

Recommended Compatible Species: The Longnose Aulonocara suits other Peacock species, but avoid housing this species with Mbuna cichlids.  The Mbuna is far too aggressive and will definitely clash with Aulonocara rostratum.

Diet: Aulonocara trematocephalum are presumed to feed on soft invertebrates in nature.  Not a great deal of information is available on its diet in an aquarium environment, but it could presumably be fed cichlid foods, vegetable matter and live meats.

Breeding: There is not much information available on this mouthbrooding Malawian cichlid.

Comments: This is a rare species with a limited distribution.  If you were lucky enough to grab a hold of one you might consider tanking it in an aquarium at least 100 cm in length.  This species is best left to experienced hobbyists.

Description: Adult males have a distinctive dorsal fin colouration with a black margin and blue stripe.  They have a black anal fin which contains large speckled egg spots.  The Aulonocara aquilonium has 16 – 17 dorsal fins, 9 – 11 dorsal soft rays, three anal spines and 8 – 9 soft anal rays.  They have a peaceful temperament and reach a maximum length of 8.5 cm.

Diet: Aulonocara aquilonium cichlids are carnivores and should be fed live invertebrates where possible.

Breeding: The female Aulonocara aquilonium is a mouthbrooder, which means they hold their eggs in their mouth for an extended period of time.  Ensure there are plenty of hiding spaces for the female during spawning. Severe stress can force the females to spit their eggs out prematurely, so avoid moving these fish during this time.  Some Aulonocara cichlids have been known to breed with each other, so avoid housing with other cichlids unless you want to encourage interbreeding.

Comments: Make sure there are plenty of hiding spots and open swimming spaces for this species.  Given its size, Aulonocara aquilonium should be housed in a medium-sized tank.  Make sure you have sand – or an equivalent – in your tank, as this species is found in sandy areas.

Description: The Aulonocara ethelwynnae cichlid, sometimes called the Chitende Cichlid, can grow up to 8 cm in length in an aquarium.  The male’s fin will develop a velvet blue colour, while its body will be brown with a bluish face.  The male’s anal fin will have large yellow egg spots which allow it to be easily identified in an aquarium.  Females, in contrast, will be a brown or grey colour.  Keep one male and three females in a tank with a minimum of 108 litres.

Diet: The Chitende Cichlid will appreciate a well-rounded diet of blood worms, krill, brine shrimp, with a cichlid flake or pellet food as a base.

Breeding: The Aulonocara ethelwynnae is a spawning cichlid.  The female is a mouthbrooder and will often hide away and not eat during the three week incubation period.

Comments: Provide a combination of rockwork and open swimming space for the Aulonocara ethelwynnae along the bottom and middle sections of your aquarium.  The females will appreciate this hiding space during the breeding period.  Like most Aulonocara, it is best to keep a smaller ratio of males to females: 1: 3 is advised.

Distribution: The Dwarf Goby Cichlid is endemic to Lake Malawi, Africa.  They prefer the upper regions of water bodies with strong currents and highly oxygenated water.

Hardness: 12 – 22 dH

Description: Rocks and rocky caves are a necessity when keeping Dwarf Goby Cichlids: they use them for protection and to keep themselves afloat when scraping algae off the rocks.  They also require highly-oxygenated water.

Eretmodus cyanostictus is a peaceful species and is therefore suitable for community tanks of at least 135L.  However, they can be quite aggressive towards one another, until they form a pair.  It is recommended that the tank hold either one or two of the species, but no more; more than one pair may result in both couples becoming aggressive towards one another.  They will grow to a maximum size of 8-9cm.

This species has a thin, elongated body.  They are covered with small blue spots and sport 6 – 7 transverse white or yellow stripes.  Colouration varies from grays and blacks to light brown, with a beige or light brown head.  The males exhibit brighter colours than the females and will be larger; he will also be distinguishable by his longer pelvic fin.

Diet: The Tanganyika Clown Cichlid’s natural diet is algae that they scrape off of rocks.  Thus, it is recommended that they are given a high amount of vegetable matter (such as spirulina flake) and occasionally treated to live or frozen foods (such as black mosquito larvae).  Do not give Eretmodus cyanostictus brine shrimp as it will cause digestive problems.

Breeding: The Dwarf Goby Cichlid are bi-parental mouth-brooders. Immediately after the female has laid the eggs on a rock, she will sweep them into her mouth whilst the male fertilises them.  She will keep them for approximately two weeks, when they change roles: she drops them into his mouth to incubate for a further week.

The fry themselves are the most difficult part of the process.  They are extremely slow-growing and require a strict feeding regiment.

Comments: Due to the difficulty of breeding and the required water conditions, this fish may be best suited to those with at least a medium-level of expertise.

Recommended Compatible Species: Other algae-eaters are suitable tank mates, such as Tropheus and Simochromis species; as well as Rainbowfish, and species such as Synodontis, Aulonocara, Lamprichthys, and Afromastacembelus.

Description: The Aulonocara auditor has three series of spots on its flank and at the base of the dorsal fin.  It has a maximum length of 8 cm and is mostly peaceful in temperament.

Diet: Aulonocara auditor cichlids are carnivores and should be fed live meat where possible.  You can feed it shrimp, flake, food pellets and bloodworms.  In the wild this species feasts upon sand-dwelling invertebrates.

Breeding: The female Aulonocara auditor is a maternal mouthbrooder.  Severe stress can force the females to spit their eggs out prematurely, so try not to move the fish around during this period.  Ensure there are plenty of hiding spaces for the female during spawning.

Comments: This species will appreciate hiding spaces and sandy areas; it will hover around the middle-lower sections of your aquarium.  You should house it in a medium size tank.  This species is not hard to look after and will suit newcomers to the hobby.

Recommended Compatible Species: Similarly sized fish of a peaceful temperament can be housed with Aulonocara cichlids.  However, some Aulonocara cichlids have been known to breed with each other, so avoid housing with other Aulonocara sp. unless you want to encourage interbreeding.

Diet: Aulonocara nyassae cichlids are carnivorous creatures.  They will appreciate plenty of live and frozen foods.  Some examples may include shrimp, bloodworms, fish pellets and a good quality flake.

Breeding: The female Emperor Cichlid is a mouthbrooder and lays her eggs on the substrate before placing them in her mouth.  The male fertilises the eggs while in they are in the female’s mouth.  The female will hold the eggs for 3 – 4 weeks before releasing the youngsters.

Comments: This species will need plenty of rock work for hiding places. The water should also be changed regularly to promote effective breeding.  To emulate its natural environment, you should provide it with sand or a substrate.  A 100 litre tank could hold several Aulonocara nyassae cichlids.

Recommended Compatible Species: Copadichromis and Placidochromis species of a different colour and pattern will make good tank mates.  Make sure you keep one male to a group of females.  Generally speaking, this is one of the more peaceful Malawian cichlids.

Description: Male Aulonocara brevinidus cichlids can reach up to 9.5 cm in length.  The males are also very territorial and will defend a shallow spawning pit.  This species is found in sandy areas at a depth range of up to 20 metres; it will therefore spend a lot of time in the lower to middle regions of your tank.

Diet: In nature, Aulonocara brevinidus will feed upon sand-dwelling microinvertebrates.  In a tank environment this species can be fed prepared cichlid foods, vegetable matter and live meats.  You should supplement this cichlid’s diet with frozen brine, spirulina and krill.  This cichlid is not a fussy eater and will accept most foods given to it.

Breeding: This species is a typical mouthbrooding Aulonocara and does not require brackish water to breed.  It is best to keep one male for many females if you are planning on breeding Aulonocara brevinidus.

Comments: You should house Aulonocara brevinidus in a tank of at least 30 gallons in volume; this cichlid will appreciate the extra space that a larger tank provides.  Allow plenty of hiding spots and rockwork, but ensure there is plenty of space for this species to swim along the bottom and middle of the tank.  Aulonocara brevinidus will spend most of its time in these sections of the tank, so decorate your aquarium accordingly.

Comments: Aulonocara koningsi cichlids inhabit mixed sand-rock habitats, so adjust your aquarium accordingly.  Allow plenty of swimming space and hiding places for the female to spawn in.  A 100 cm tank will provide enough space for this Peacock to flourish.

Description: Cyphotilapia frontosa can reach up to 33 cm in an aquarium, and can live up to 25 years.  This species has 6 – 7 black, vertical bars that run down a white or blue body.  This species is very difficult to sex, although males generally hav ea larger nuchal hump.  As they grow older, this species’ fins get longer and more elaborate. 

Diet: This species will accept all kinds of food.  You can feed the Humphead Cichlid any small fish species, such as krill, shrimp, mysis – even worms.  Do not feed this species flakes; flake is unlikely to do them much good and they will often ignore it as a food source.

Breeding: Cyphotilapia frontosa do not reach sexual maturity for 3 – 4 years, so you will have to be patient if breeding this impressive species.  The sexually active male will turn a shade of blue, particularly in the snout region, and will find an open area to release his milt.  The female, once she has gathered what is going on, will pass over the area and drop an egg.  The male’s milt can fertilise eggs several minutes after it has been released in the tank.  This species’ brood can reach up to 50, sometimes even 80, fry.  The female will hold for up to five weeks, and you should raise the fry separate from the adults.

Comments: You do not need to overly decorate your tank with this species; a few rocks will do the job.  You can use clay pots to create caves and hiding spaces – particularly if you are housing a single Humphead Cichlid.  It is worth adding a sandy substrate to simulate its natural environment.  Given this species’ size, 10 adults should be housed in a tank no less than 125 gallons.

Recommended Compatible Species: Cyphotilapia frontosa is quite a peaceful, tolerant species, but it should not be housed with small, defenceless fish.  Ideal tank mates may include other large Lake Malawi cichlids and some Synodontis species.

Distribution: Chilotilapia rhoadesii, better known as Bream, is an African freshwater cichlid, distributed in Lake Malawi over muddy bottoms in both shallow and deep waters.

Description: This Lake Malawian cichlid can reach an impressive 22 cm in length.  Adult males have a blue colouration on both their head and body, with a greyish base colour.  The Bream’s mouth points downwards, which allows it to easily break open snail shells.  It is therefore no surprise that Chilotilapia rhoadesii’s favourite food-type is the snail.

Diet: In the wild, Chilotilapia rhoadesii has a special affinity for snails.  In the aquarium environment it will accept all types of food, but you should vary things up to keep this fish at optimum health.  You might include live foods – snails, of course, are good – and good quality fish pellets, but make sure you don’t forget to feed it vegetables.

Breeding: Chilotilapia rhoadesii females are mouthbrooders.  When attempting to breed this species should you combine a pair of males with a group of females to maximise your chances of successful breeding.  The mother will release the fry after three weeks of mouthbrooding.

Comments: Chilotilapia rhoadesii will require plenty of hiding spaces and a tank size of at least 60 gallons.  You should create rock formations and large caves in your aquarium, and make sure you have a very coarse substrate in place.  You can put plants in your tank if you wish, as it is unlikely this species would attempt to munch on them.  This species is very popular within the hobby and is suitable for beginners.

Recommended Compatible Species: Chilotilapia rhoadesii should be housed with other non-aggressive Lake Malawian cichlids.  Generally speaking, Lake Malawian cichlids do not make good community fish, so it may be a good idea to tank Bream in a one-species aquarium.

Distribution: Tanganicodus irsacae, commonly known as the Spotted Goby, is a freshwater species endemic to Lake Tanganyika, Africa.  It is usually found near the shoreline, among the pebbles.

Temperature: 24°C – 28C (75 – 82F)

Hardness: 10 – 20 dH

Description: Tanganicodus irsacae usually reaches a length of 6 – 7 cm in an aquarium.   This species can, if treated properly, live from 3 – 5 years in an aquarium.  It has a light brown to opaque colouring and several light blue dots that run along its body, along with some thin vertical gold to white bars.  It has blue fins and a blue line that runs along its lower jaw.  This species has an interestingly shaped mouth – resembling an overbite – and eyes that are near the top of its head.

Diet: Tanganicodus irsacae, an omnivore, will eat algae in the wild; in an aquarium it can be give live and frozen foods – crustaceans, Cyclops, brine shrimp, even bloodworms on rare occasions – and some flake.

Breeding: Spotted Gobies are biparental mouthbrooders; the female will lay eggs and pick them in her mouth, and the male will swim over and release sperm into the female’s mouth to fertilise the eggs.  After the fry have hatched from the female’s mouth, the male will incubate them for a further 9 – 16 days; he should be removed if in a community tank.  You will need to provide small stones for the fry to hide in once they have been released from the male’s mouth.

Comments: Tanganicodus irsacae can be kept in a decent sized tank of around 30 gallons.  It will require a well-oxygenated tank and a strong filter to create good water movement.  You should put plenty of rocks and flowerpots in your tank to create caves, along with a sandy substrate.  Weekly water changes of 10 – 15 per cent are recommended.  This species is difficult to look after and is therefore better suited to experienced hobbyists.

Diet: Provide Aulonocara maylandi with plenty of live and frozen foods.  Some good ideas may include a good quality fish flake, standard fish pellets, bloodworms, brine shrimp and earthworms.

Breeding: The male will choose a spawning site and display an intense colour in attempt to mate with the females around him.  Spawn this species in a harem to curb this aggression.  The female is a mouthbrooder and will carry a large brood of 60 – 100 eggs in its mouth for three weeks.  Be careful if moving the fish during this period.

Comments: Provide some flat stones and sand for spawning sites.  This species likes to take in sand and blow it out its gills when eating in order to remove any food items it may find.  A 108 litre tank will house a single male Aulonocara maylandi with a group of females.  Be vigilant in keeping the water – and tank – clean to optimise this species’ health.

Recommended Compatible Species: Male Sulphurhead Peacocks will fight with any fish with a similar colour and pattern, so avoid this when selecting tankmates.  Possible tank mates may include Copadichromis and Placidochromis species of a different colour and pattern.  An alternative would be to house this Peacock in a one-species tank; this species’ unique, vibrant yellow colouration can easily stand alone in a tank of its own.

Breeding: The female Aulonocara aquilonium is a mouthbrooder, which means they hold their eggs in their mouth for an extended period of time.  Ensure there are plenty of hiding spaces for the female during spawning. Family: Cichlidae

Distribution: Cyrtocara moorii, known as either the Humphead or the Malawi Blue Dolphin, is a widely spread benthopelagic cichlid of Lake Malawi.     

PH: 7.0 – 9.0

Temperature: 24°C – 26°C (74 – 79F)

Hardness: 10 – 18 dH

Description: Cyrtocara moorii is a popular species that can reach a maximum length of around 20 cm. Males have a prominent nuchal hump, giving it its common name: Humphead.  This species has an elongated snout and a blue colouration.  Interestingly, its other common name, Malawi Blue Dolphin, was coined because this elongated snout is said to resemble a dolphin’s face.  It has a life expectancy of 12 years.   

Diet: This species is not fussy when it comes to feeding time.  You can offer it cichlid flakes, pellets and frozen foods.  Live foods – bloodworms, brine shrimp, and beef heart chunks – should be added to a well-balanced diet.

Breeding: The Humphead is a mouthbrooding, egg laying species.  Males will dig a hole in a substrate or find a flat, clean rock for a spawning site.  He will fertilise the eggs and the female will then incubate them.  The eggs will hatch after 18 – 21 days; the fry will be released a week later.  To maximise your chances of breeding, you should house one male with several females.

Comments: This species will require plenty of swimming room, rockwork for caves, and a sandy substrate.  You should house this species in a large aquarium; you should also keep Cyrtocara moorii in groups of six.  A 75 gallon tank should hold several adults.  The Malawian Blue Dolphin is suitable for newcomers to the hobby.

Recommended Compatible Species: Cyrtocara moorii is a very peaceful cichlid, compared to others from the Lake Malawi region.  You could house this species with other peaceful haps and peacocks – but definitely not with mbunas.

Distribution: Cyprichromis leptosoma is another Lake Tanganyikan cichlid, found between Tanzania’s Kigoma region and Mpulungu, Zambia.     

PH: 8.0 – 9.0

Temperature: 23°C – 25°C (72 – 76F)

Hardness: 9 – 19 dH

Description: Cyprichromis leptosoma can reach a maximum length of 11 cm. This species has a torpedo-like shape and is an excellent swimmer and jumper.  Males have a light sliver-brown colouration and a yellow tail, a blue dorsal fin with some black markings, and blue, yellow-tipped pelvic and anal fins.  Females, in contrast, are plainer, light-brown, with a touch of silver in some areas.  You can expect this species to live 5 – 8 years on average.  

Diet: In the wild, Cyprichromis leptosoma will eat plankton out of the mid-water areas, and are used to eating very small particles of food.  This species will require regular small meals, given its petite size.  You should feed it a quality flake and brine shrimp as its staple diet, but add glassworms and plankton on the odd occasion.

Breeding: Cyprichromis leptosoma females are maternal mouthbrooders.  The female will catch the male’s sperm in her mouth, and lay her eggs in mid-water.  She will then swim backwards to accept the egg in her mouth.  This process will repeat itself several times; she will release the fry after about three weeks.  You can feed the youngster the same diet as the adults, but on a smaller scale.

Comments: This species will require plenty of swimming room, a rock wall, and a sand substrate.  This species schools in the thousands in the wild, and will do best in groups of 12 or more.  Cyprichromis leptosoma is a hardy species that will add life and colour to any tank, and is highly recommended to newcomers to the hobby.

Article/Books:

Recommended Compatible Species: Cyprichromis leptosoma will go well with any Lake Tanganyikans, due to their excellent temperament and beautiful colouration.  Species of Julidochromis, Chalinochromis and Paracyprichromis will all be compatible with Cyprichromis leptosoma. Do not house this species with aggressive Malawian cichlids.

Family: Cichlidae

Distribution: Aulonocara stonemani cichlids are distributed in the southeast and southwest arms of Lake Malawi, Africa, and Monkey Bay.

PH: 7.5 – 9.0

Temperature: 26 – 28°C (78 – 82°F)

Hardness: 20 – 30 dH

Description: This African cichlid is on the smaller scale at 5.5 cm in length.  It has not been exported in the aquarium trade and thus little is known about it.  It occurs in deep waters of up to 80 metres and feeds on small sand-dwelling invertebrates.

Diet: Aulonocara stonemani cichlids are carnivores and should be fed food similar to what they would eat in nature: small, sand-dwelling invertebrates.

Breeding: The Aulonocara stonemani is a mouthbrooder; care should be taken during this period of incubation.  Other than this, there is not much information available on this species’ breeding habits.

Comments: This is a rare species with a limited distribution.  It may not be good for aquarium use as little is known about it. As such, it is best suited to experienced hobbyists or those with extensive knowledge of the Cichlid family.

Article/Books:

Recommended Compatible Species: The Aulonocara stonemani appears to have a peaceful temperament and should be housed with similarly sized, mild-mannered species.  Avoid housing with Mbunas, however, as these two can end up in violent clashes.

Distribution: The Aulonocara brevirostre is a species of dwarf cichlid distributed in the southern part of Lake Malawi.

PH: To mirror the conditions of Lake Malawi, keep pH levels around the 8.0 – 8.5 mark.

Temperature: 26-29°C (79-84°F)

Hardness: Most Aulonocaras suit a hardness of 10 – 18 dH

Description: Male Aulonocara brevirostre cichlids usually grow up to 8 cm in length.

Diet: A healthy mix of prepared cichlid foods, vegetable matter and live meats will suit this species’ diet.

Breeding: There is not a lot of information available on this species’ breeding habits.

Comments: Given the lack of available information, this species is best left to experienced hobbyists.

Article/Books:

Recommended Compatible Species: Similarly sized fish of a peaceful temperament can be housed with Aulonocara cichlids.  Be mindful that keeping different species of Aulonocara in the one tank can lead to interbreeding.
